Next-to-New: A Legacy of Support

For sixty years Next-to-New has continuously strived to make new and gently used high-quality merchandise affordable for Members of our community in need and to provide a stable funding source for the Junior League of Saint Paul. Beginning in 1949 as a shop in downtown Saint Paul and transforming in 1985 into a one-day garage sale held the first Saturday in October at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, Next-To-New is the longest running fundraiser for JLSP, providing nearly $1 million in financial support during its sixty-year history and priceless support for the Twin Cities community.

Next-to-New has become one of the largest secondhand sales and most anticipated events in the Twin Cities, expanding far beyond clothing to include furniture, artwork, toys, household items and décor, books, sporting goods, fine antiques and wedding gowns, all at a fraction of the retail price. Items are generously donated by JLSP Members, several local businesses and other friends of JLSP.

The strength of the legacy of JLSP in the community can be largely attributed to the success of Next-to-New in providing funds to support the League’s projects in the community, insuring our ability to successfully bring the Junior League’s mission to life in Saint Paul. Next-to-New has made it possible for JLSP to support vital community needs such as child and adult physical rehabilitation (1950s), low income senior citizen housing (1960s), drug education programs (1970s), the arts (1980s), domestic violence prevention (1990s), and strengthening bonds between children and care givers (today).
