Meet Our Members

Sarah Fastner

Why did you join JLSP?

I discovered Junior League through a friend of mine who lives in Chicago. Her positive experience inspired me to find out more about the JLSP. I felt that it would be a good way to volunteer while also networking with like-minded women in the community.

How long have you been a member of JLSP?

I’m a first year active and having a wonderful experience.

What is your current placement with JLSP?

My main placement is on the Arrangements Committee. It has been so much fun working with this great group of women. I look forward to what the next few months will bring for us as we try to get creative with meeting sites and menus. My second placement is on the Blue Jeans & Bling Committee where I will work to organize our annual silent auction event to raise funds for JLSP.

What are one or two of your favorite things about JLSP?

I am so impressed with the passion and hard work of the JLSP Members. It is wonderful to be part of a group that is committed to improving our community. I also enjoy the friendships I have made so far in the League. It is exciting to meet new people at every General Membership Meeting.

What are some of the things you learned and skills you have developed, or hope to develop, through your JLSP experience?

Through JLSP I hope to improve and expand my leadership skills. I also think that the JLSP will help me reach outside of my comfort zone through working on other committees in the future.

Why did you join the JLSP?

I joined the JLSP first as a way to give back to my community. I was looking for an outlet where I could volunteer my time and positively impact the lives of women and children in need. I also joined to meet other women who shared the same goal and to broaden my circle of friends. I am currently in my 4th year with JLSP.

What was your favorite placement with the JLSP?

It is really hard to pick one; I have enjoyed them all so much. I particularly enjoyed last year chairing the ASID Showcase project and really like this year’s placement on the New Member Committee. It is very fun meeting potential New Members and learning why they are interested in getting involved. I also enjoy sharing JLSP’s Mission and meeting some phenomenal women.

What are some of your best JLSP memories?

Some of my favorite memories include the work I have done with Women’s Advocates and Saint Paul Plays. It is so gratifying to see the joy in the children’s faces when you sit down and engage with them. You can tell it really means a lot to them.

How has your JLSP experience helped you in other aspects of you life?

The training you receive through the League is great for all aspects of life. For example, I have carried what I have learned through JLSP meetings and trainings to my work life – running meetings, managing staff, setting goals and objectives, budgeting, etc.

What is your favorite memory of JLSP?

The Next-to-New sale is one of my favorite memories of JLSP. I think it is great how the League pulls together to produce this enormous sale – and that we have a good time and enjoy each other’s company while doing so.

How has JLSP impacted your life?

One thing that comes to mind is how my experience with JLSP helped me to run effective meetings. This was very useful for the ten years I served on the Dodge Nature Center Board, including time as President of this Board. JLSP has also helped me to set goals and objectives in other parts of my life including pursuing my interest training for horse shows.

Why do you support the League?

The mission of the League is important. I believe in how the League trains women to be volunteers and how to be more effective in other aspects of their lives. It is wonderful to be doing good work and productive things while, at the same time, enjoying the social aspects of the League.
